What is a home-based Charter School?

The following question is asked by DCHEA members and non-members in many forms around this time of each year.

Question: I wanted to ask you about Public Charter Schools. Do they conflict with DCHEA? And if so why?

Answer: Charter Schools are government entities and by enrolling into this option, a family is enrolling into a public school and placing their children's education under the government's authority.

Is this wrong? No. It is a valid educational option.

Charter School Facilitators and Parents receive government funds and typically have their own networks of support. Many Charter Schools organize activities and field trips for their pupils. And being under the government's system, these families have no need for legal organizations to defend their rights to home educate.

What is DCHEA?
DCHEA was formed over twenty-five years ago to support Christian families who educate their children at home, independently. These families have different support needs than those choosing other educational options.

DCHEA, being a Christian organization, supports families who are placing their children's education under God's authority (following the government's guidelines for private schools). This is not possible in a Charter School, where the law states that religion cannot be taught, directly or indirectly.

CALIFORNIA CONSTITUTION / ARTICLE 9 / EDUCATION SEC. 8.
No public money shall ever be appropriated for the support of any sectarian or denominational school, or any school not under the exclusive control of the officers of the public schools; nor shall any sectarian or denominational doctrine be taught, or instruction thereon be permitted, directly or indirectly, in any of the common schools of this State.

DCHEA families do not receive government funds, but rely upon Jehovah Jireh for provision of homeschooling supplies, curriculum, and activities from year to year. The 4-person Board is seated with unpaid volunteers who put in many hours each year. Numerous parents also give freely of their time and financial resources.

DCHEA families must be diligent in maintaining their parental rights, as given biblically. We pray diligently for the freedoms we have and support groups such as HSLDA, who help us maintain those freedoms. Take a look at what happens when those freedoms are destroyed.

In 2002 and 2008, home educating parents in California were under attack...by "opinion" in 2002 and by "law" in 2008. As independent, home educating parents prayed and sent letters to state officials, parents who had chosen any other option (private campus schools, charter schools, public campus schools, etc.) had no reason to get involved, as these attacks did not threaten their parental or educational lifestyle. Thankfully, a very small percentage did get involved, as these parents understood that the stripping of parental authority in any area, will affect parental authority in all areas.

This said, each family must research and weigh their different educational options, whether government or independent, campus or home. And then choose the one that they feel is best for their family. Each family knows what is right for each of their children. Many of us know families who have a child on a public or private school campus and have another learning at home. It's not about right and wrong...it is about parental choice.

DCHEA simply supports Christian families who choose to home educate independently or through a Private Study Program (PSP).

Each educational venue has different challenges and needs. To attempt to support all Christian families, no matter their educational choice, would be to the detriment of the type of support required by the Independent families, which DCHEA was originally formed to serve.

Unfortunately, over the years, a few families have attempted to stir up animosity between DCHEA and Charter entities in our area. We pray that this article will clear up some of the confusion or misunderstanding. DCHEA encourages unity within the homeschool community, regardless of which educational option a family chooses.

Lewis & Clark at the IMAX

Great Family Event...

I noticed as we were driving by the Desert IMAX Theatre a couple days ago that Lewis and Clark: Great Journey West was playing at 11 AM.

This movie was a HUGE DCHEA family favorite about 5 years ago. It was a planned field trip and over 100 of us showed up for it. With the exception of a "speculative comment" (which makes for great discussion) at the very end of the movie, it is an excellent Living History film.

This museum offers a rich history of the Temecula Valley, artifacts, ranching and farming equipment, info on the Mission San Luis Rey period, establishment of the ranchos, stagecoach and railroads.

So that's a total of $5.50 for the whole day and 2 museums!

New Work Permit Law

As a result of the passage of AB 66 last fall, a new law regarding work permits will go into effect on January 1, 2010.

The California Department of Education is still working on updating information, forms, and procedures, so some details may change. However, we can answer some of the questions that have been asked about the new law.

ANOTHER CHANCE TO HIKE "LADDER CANYON LOOP!"

*My daughter and I were the only ones that went on the hike Saturday, Nov. 7th. Philip Ferannti, our guide, decided to take us on a little closer hike. We went to Pushawalla Palms Oasis in the Coachella Preserve off Thousand Palms Cyn Rd. It was about 6 miles with some climbing trails, but when we got to the Oasis there was actually some water trickling at the bottom.

We saw Red Tailed Hawks circling over our heads and some jets flying overhead from the Air Show in Thermal. It was a great hike, close by, and one I am glad to know about now so I can take family or friends that come to town.

For the Ladder Canyon Hike, bring plenty of water, dress in layers and wear sturdy hiking boots or tennis shoes. This hike is an easy hike - great for the whole family...(but we will be climbing ladders!) It is approximately 5 miles.

POWERFUL!

That's the word I would use to describe last night's MNO. I think everyone in attendance was blessed to experience what God is doing in the lives of His people. Right in the midst of our little homeschool community.

Our group totalled seven and it's not lost on me (as our family studies Revelation) that this group was "perfect" and "complete." Three new homeschooling mamas, three veterans, and one who's graduated her children were in attendance. Sharing, encouragement, prayer and remembering.

Congratulations to Marcie, who won the door prize ~ a tea cup! And the first in her collection.

I still remember the very first MNO I attended many years ago. I remember who was there and how blessed I was by those moms who had gone before me. I pray that each mom beginning this adventure, picked up a little something last night that will stay with them on their journey as well.

Award winning Visible Fictions, one of the UK’s leading theatre companies, presents a brand new version of an ancient Greek myth. Two actors, one hour, and one golden fleece set the stage for a great adventure of romance, destiny, heroism and revenge. Jason’s uncle isn’t exactly lovable…he’s murdered his brother (the king) and stolen the kingdom and now nobody dares stand up to him. Things are about to get a major shakeup though because Jason is BACK! After being banished as a baby, our wannabe hero returns to claim his rightful throne and make some big changes. However, in ancient times nothing is that straightforward. Jason and his crew must sail on The Argo to the other side of the world to find the Golden Fleece and bring it back in order to unite the people again. As if that wasn’t difficult enough, the odd monster, sleeping dragon and clashing rock endeavor to ruin his trip and spice things up on this most fantastic of journeys!

Thomas the Train will be in Perris at the Orange Empire Railway Museum during the month of November.

If you have little ones(or older ones, or dads or moms, it's fun for every age), this is great trip to take. I have taken my boys 3 different times and it is always a big hit. There's lots to do and you get to explore all the old trains. And it's great for girls too!

The best part though is riding on an actual Thomas the Tank Engine train. My boys and I are going to study trains for a couple weeks before we go and they can't wait. There are no group or school rates, but it is a great family day experience.

Exploring Science

As your students take their journey back in time with their literature class, they will be taking a science journey, as well.
Trimester 1 - will be Physics as Utilized in the 18th Century.

We will learn all about how our Revolutionary War heroes lifted heavy objects like cannons without cranes and how they could change lateral motion into ro-tational motion without the benefit of electricity.
Trimester 2 - will correspond with your student’s literature jaunt to the 1860s.

We will learn all about the fabulous Inventions and In-ventors of the 19th Century. So many advancements in science were made during the time our country was busy fighting its own Civil War.
Trimester 3 - remains under construction.

We have some exciting things planned for the High School CoOp Class in the fall. We will be offering a Personal Finance and Investments class, where the students will be learning all about finances from a Christian perspective and for the Investments portion be doing an actual mock stock market/investments portfolio.

For the second hour, we will continue to build on to the public speaking segment by going into Debate (using Bob Jones Speech/Debate course) to teach the students to be effective communicators and able to defend their faith, opinions, worldview, and apologetics in a respectful, cognitive, and Godly way. We prayerfully strive to offer the High School students courses that will prepare them for what they will encounter in their college or work environment.

Chemistry Lab sign-ups

We are working diligently to coordinate a Chemistry Lab class for those students looking to fill that requirement. We need a list of interested students in order to move forward with the planning.

Classes will be scheduled Friday afternoons (Time TBD) and taught by our own Gale F. The location will be a private home near the CoOp church.

This class is only the LAB portion of chemistry that should coordinate with curriculum you teach at home. Students should be high school level or mature junior highers. If you have any questions regarding the course, contact Gale at the email address in the August 27 email alert.

***CLASS TUITION - $25 per student per month. This covers all lab materials and instruction.

Community Bible Study (CBS) in La Quinta

The La Quinta Community Bible Study (CBS) is currently taking registrations for this school year's classes.

CBS is a non-denominational community Bible study using home study questions, commentary, small group discussion and life application lecture. Many of the homeschool families involved, use the lessons as the basis for their Bible curriculum for their homeschools.

At the La Quinta location, simultaneous classes for homeschool children enable the entire family to participate ~ all studying the same subject but at their own level. The homeschool classes include an age-appropriate lecture and activites including crafts, games, and presentations. Homework is shared with others in a small group setting.

Classes for all ages: Adult, Nursery, Preschool and 4 homeschool classes: lower elementary, upper elementary, Jr. High, High School.

The homeschool classes will be taught by Cindy L., Yvonne S., Cindy J. and Susie B.. (3 of the 4 are DCHEA moms!)

Thursday mornings beginning September 24th (until the 3rd week of May)

This is going to be another great time on the rocks out in Joshua Tree. We hope you, your family, relatives and home school friends will join us. CAM staff will set up several different vertical climbs for beginners and advanced climbers alike.

The cost for rock climbing remains $45 per person, per day. That includes all the gear: helmet, ropes, harnesses and specialized rock climbing shoes-everything needed to experience the thrills of real rock climbing is provided. Add to this the benefit of a Christian instructor, Waffle, who will be relating rock climbing to our walk with the Lord!

This is an all day event! Although, if you can spend the night, Waffle’s fire side Bible stories and other interesting stories are amazing! To sign up simply call the phone # in DCHEA's August 23, 2009 email alert. Upon receipt of fees we send out Med./Lib. forms to be filled out completely for each climber and brought with you.

The 20th Annual Southern California Homeschool Fair is coming to Ontario this Memorial Day 2009. Remember to save projects your child has completed since June1, 2008. You can enter them into the fair. What is DCHEA? What is a Charter/ISP?

The following question was asked by a DCHEA member on August 9, 2007 and is often asked throughout each school year in some form by members and non-members.

Question: I wanted to ask you about Public Charter Schools. Do they conflict with DCHEA? And if so why?

Answer: Charter Schools are government entities and by enrolling into this option, a family is enrolling into a public school and placing their children's education under the government's authority.

Is this wrong? Absolutely not! It is a valid educational option.

Charter School Facilitators and Parents receive government funds and typically have their own networks of support. Many Charter Schools organize activities and field trips for their pupils. And being under the government's system, these families have no need for legal organizations to defend their rights to home educate.

What is DCHEA?
DCHEA was formed over twenty-five years ago to support Christian families who educate their children at home, independently. These families have different support needs than those choosing other educational options.

DCHEA, being a Christian organization, supports families who are placing their children's education under God's authority (following the government's guidelines for private schools). This is not possible in a Charter School, where the law states that religion cannot be taught, directly or indirectly.

CALIFORNIA CONSTITUTION / ARTICLE 9 / EDUCATION SEC. 8.
No public money shall ever be appropriated for the support of any sectarian or denominational school, or any school not under the exclusive control of the officers of the public schools; nor shall any sectarian or denominational doctrine be taught, or instruction thereon be permitted, directly or indirectly, in any of the common schools of this State.

DCHEA families do not receive government funds, but rely upon Jehovah Jireh for provision of homeschooling supplies, curriculum, and activities from year to year. The 4-person Board is seated with unpaid volunteers who put in many hours each year. Numerous parents also give freely of their time and financial resources.

DCHEA families must be diligent in maintaining their parental rights, as given biblically. We pray diligently for the freedoms we have and support groups such as HSLDA, who help us maintain those freedoms. Take a look at what happens when those freedoms are destroyed.

In 2002 and 2008, home educating parents in California were under attack...by "opinion" in 2002 and by "law" in 2008. As independent, home educating parents prayed and sent letters to state officials, parents who had chosen any other option (private campus schools, charter schools, public campus schools, etc.) had no reason to get involved, as these attacks did not threaten their parental or educational lifestyle. Thankfully, a very small percentage did get involved, as these parents understood that the stripping of parental authority in any area, will affect parental authority in all areas.

This said, each family must research and weigh their different educational options, whether government or independent, campus or home. And then choose the one that they feel is best for their family. Each family knows what is right for each of their children. Many of us know families who have a child on a public or private school campus and have another learning at home. It's not about right and wrong...it is about parental choice.

DCHEA simply supports Christian families who choose to home educate independently or through a Private Study Program (PSP). Each educational venue has different challenges and needs. To attempt to support all Christian families, no matter their educational choice, would be to the detriment of the type of support required by the Independent families, which DCHEA was originally formed to serve.

Unfortunately, over the years, a few families have attempted to stir up animosity between DCHEA and Charter entities in our area. We pray that this article will clear up some of the confusion or misunderstanding. DCHEA encourages unity within the homeschool community, regardless of which educational option a family chooses.

Kids Need Outdoor Time!

Have your children lost touch with nature? When is the last time they rolled in a pile of leaves, climbed a tree, rode their bikes, chased a butterfly through the park or went wading in a creek?

Kids need outdoor time. It's good for them, and, according to many experts, the lack of it can take a toll on their physical, emotional and psychological well-being.

In his book, Last Child in the Woods, author Richard Louv explores research that links a lack of outdoor time to increasing rates of childhood obesity, attention disorders and depression.

And a number of studies have shown that regular, unstructured playtime in nature can help make kids smarter, more self-disciplined, calmer, happier and more cooperative.

So make it a point to allow your children plenty of time to play outside. And get out there with them! Take a hike, paddle a canoe, explore a nature trail, hunt for bugs or go fishing. Connecting with nature is good for their bodies - and their souls!

Space Science Day & Essay Contest

This event is for 5th grade through 12th grade students - no adults or younger siblings please. You can sign up as a group or as individuals. It is free.

Participants choose from a list of science based classes, lectures and demonstrations they want to attend that have been set up for this day. Parents and younger siblings can wait outside the classrooms, but may not attend the lectures and demonstrations because space is limited.

If you make a reservation, please show up. Every year we have a few families who decide to just sleep in that Saturday morning since they didn't pay anything for this event. That is unfair to the organization putting it on, unfair to the students who were turned away because all the spots were taken, and definitely unfair to the homeschool community that gets a bad reputation based on a few unthinking people.

This is not only a free event, it includes a free lunch for the first 850 participants. There is also an essay contest this year to win dinner with the astronauts. Check out the email below for details.

On behalf of the Ellison S. Onizuka Memorial Committee, El Camino College, and American Honda Motor Co., Inc., you are cordially invited to participate in Space Science Day 2009 at El Camino College on Saturday, April 25. This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident that took the lives of the seven crew members including Ellison Onizuka.

We are expecting another great turnout as well as an enjoyable and informative day. Once again, the whole event is FREE -- including lunch for the first 850 participants. This year's featured speaker has not yet been announced but our NASA astronaut has always exceeded our expectations. We are anticipating another inspiring presentation for 2009.

More information will be sent to all who sign up as the date nears. Check in will begin shortly after 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 25. The day will end just after lunch with the awards for the Egg Drop Competition. Once again, parents, teachers and administrators are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Finally, for El Camino College's Space Science Day 2009, an essay contest is being conducted with the winner receiving an invitation to meet and attend dinner with our guest Astronaut from NASA on Friday, April 24, 2009 at a local restaurant to be identified shortly. The winner will be able to bring 3 guests to the dinner as well - usually the parents and one sibling or friend. Only students in grades 5 through 12 are eligible.

Essay Subject: In President Barack Obama's "New Era of Responsibility" there would be an improvement in science test scores in America's schools. In order to accomplish this, what do you consider the most important areas one needs to study in the field of science and why are these areas important to you?"

To all potential SAT testers:

It is that time of year again when I need to check to see who is available and willing to be a SAT tester. I am looking at dates of May 26, 27 and 28. This last week in May seemed to work well last year.

Please let me know if you would like to be a tester and what grade(s) you would like or not like to test. If you are not available to be tester, please let me know that also.

If you are aware of another homeschool mom that has a 4 year degree that might like to be a tester, please let me know and I will contact her with information on how she can become a tester also.

Debate Team Honors

To God be the glory!

The 2009 Concordia Challenge, proved itself yet another memorable learning experience for the team this past weekend. It was at the lovely campus of Concordia University Irvine that a few of our members were especially honored to qualify to the State Championship in their respective events.

Hannah Seals was thrilled to make Semi-Finals in Original Oratory speaking, and out of over 150 participants in Impromptu, Lauren Blankenship was a Semi-Finalist in the Varsity track and Lincoln Anderson was a Finalist in the Novice track.

Other events that we participated in were Team Policy Debate, Apologetics, and Dramatic Literary interpretations, all of which went smoothly and we all grew leaps and bounds in those areas as well. Over all, everyone returned home tired yet satisfied with the assurance that we all did our best and gave God the glory for our achievements.

We are pleased to announce that the Club is finalizing its preparations for the upcoming season and has scheduled a special orientation for those interested in participating with the Club. We have scheduled an orientation for April 25th, 2009. The time and location are to be announced.

In addition, this year we are making plans to host a “Jr. Novice” branch of the club. This is intended for children under the minimum “competition” age requirement (the NCFCA is for students ages 12 - 18) who are in grades 1-5 (as of Fall 2009); imperatively, they must be able to read and write on their own. The classes will provide an interactive, Christ-centered environment for young students to expand their horizons with skills in public speaking and practice in problem solving, defending their faith and beyond.

It is our hope that this program will help your children jumpstart their skills in the area of forensics and will prepare them for the competition age and the rest of their lives as Christ’s followers and messengers.

Please keep the team in your prayers. We appreciate all that you have lifted up to the Father on our behalf thus far, and we pray that He blesses you richly as you continue to seek Him in all you do!

Does your child have an interest in cooking? Cooking classes are not only a great opportunity to explore nutrition and cooking basics, but it can actually incorporate math conversions, geography and food science! What a fun way to educate!

The next cooking class is Wednesday, December 17 from noon to 2 PM.

On the Menu: "Gourmet pizza" and learning about the origin of pizza and the country of Italy.
Cost: $50 per person for the two hour class. The class is nearly full.

Auditions, casting and script distribution will happen today! If there is time, we will have the first read-through.

If you haven't signed up, please contact Linda B. ASAP. If you came to the meeting and didn't add your child's name to the sign-up sheet, please contact Linda B. Preparations need to be made and enough scripts need to be avaiable for everyone who wants to participate.

Total Cost: $80 per child. Includes practice time/play production/costume.

You will be able to make monthly payments of $20 per child.

For those who attended the mandatory meeting, Thank you for your attention, support, and your time. We plan on having a great Play and we cannot do any of it without parents' support.

Wow! Park Day attendance hit an all time high today. What a great turn-out! It was wonderful to see all the children playing and the older boys playing basketball with full teams.
